Transmission Gully - Cut 40

Project Overview: Bulk earthworks, drainage, and environmental controls for construction of Cut 40 and Fill 41-42 of the Transmission Gully Motorway. Job started January 2017 and the weather was extremely wet until September with Wellington’s yearly rainfall achieved by this time! A huge amount of earthworks achieved up to this point.

Interesting Points

  • Total earthworks volume including topsoil handling, cut to fill in Wellington Greywacke rock, unsuitable, and other miscellaneous earthworks was over 700,000m3.

  • Achieved daily volumes consistently of over 10,000m3 solid fill volume. Best day 13,300m3! Huge achievement

  • 50m deep fill batters all trimmed with GPS machinery, topsoiled and prepared for planting. Mulch cover put on by Goodmans team.

  • Very steep site with limited access. To remove unsuitable in the gully’s, we towed the 30 tonne dumpers out with a D6 dozer. They also had to be lowered back down. Motorscrapers were descending at 58%.

  • 50,000m3 of R2 rock ripped by Cat D9 and D10 Bulldozers
